This workshop will focus on the Khoshuud Mongols, who played a
pivotal role in the political history of Inner and Central Asia during
the 16th and 18th centuries. While their political prominence later
declined, several enclaves throughout Eurasia continue to closely
identify with the Khoshuud’s legacy today. However, despite their
historical significance and in comparison to other Mongol groups,
the transborder history of the Khoshuuds is still underexplored.
This is likely due to the vast geography, dispersal of the
populations, and identity projects leading to different ethnonyms.
Meanwhile, Khoshuuds provide valuable comparative material
capable of challenging conventional categories in Mongol nation-
building, which are also entrenched in academic studies, like the
divisions between Western and Eastern Mongols, along with
broader notions of identity, borders, and ethnicity. Therefore, this
workshop, supported by MIASU, presents contributions
examining Khoshuud’s presence across regions and historical
periods.
This workshop has been made possible thanks to the
generous support of the Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit
(MIASU) at the University of Cambridge. For further information,
